The Best Innings from the Park
Here's our top 3 innings from the 130-year cricketing history at Lancaster Park:
No.1 Nathan Astle, 222 runs, 2022
It was the last day of the Test match, with NZ chasing an unlikely 550 runs. Yet, the growing crowd witnessed an innings that still ranks as the fastest double century in Test cricket. Astle's century came off 114 balls, and his 200 came off just 153 balls. He hit 11 sixes. It was described as "the most spectacular innings in Test cricket history."
No.2 Bert Sutcliffe, 385 runs, 1952
In another innings that remains in the NZ record books, the left-handed Sutcliffe finished his record innings of 385 with 46 fours and 3 sixes in his innings, batting for 461 minutes. He batted across 2 days, with a rest day in the middle, where he played 45 holes of golf!
No.3 Victor Trumper, 293 runs, 1914
Trumper formed part of an invitation Australian XI that toured NZ in 1914. In his much-anticipated appearance on day 2 of the match, he proceeded to hit the ball to all corners of the park. His first century came in 73 minutes, and his 200 in just 131 minutes. He was finally dismissed after scoring 44 fours and 3 sixes, for a total of 293 runs in 180 minutes.
